What to pack?

Image

TRAVEL EXPERIENCE:  Do you ever have that moment when you’re packing for a trip, it goes something like this:  WHAT THE HECK AM I FORGETTING??? (Said, as sweat is wiped from brow…)  That’s been my mindset all morning.  I’m gearing up for my next trip and, although I’m a packing enthusiast and usually end up having everything I need, I still have my moments of, shall we say, packing panic.

Fortunately, I rely on my “Pack This” cheat sheet:

Image

Have you seen?  LOVE!  First of all, I have a passion for lists, so this is right up my alley.  Secondly, I love to travel and pack as concisely as possible when doing so.  It’s essentially a win-win in both departments.  I received this as a gift a few years ago and adore it.  It’s made by the Knock Knock company – if you’re not familiar, check them out.

Okay, I’m off… stay tuned for updates while traveling!

Founding Farmers

Image

DINING EXPERIENCE:  While in Washington, D.C. a few weeks ago, I dined at Founding Farmers, a great restaurant with southern inspired cuisine that prides itself on its quality, sustainable ingredients used to create “true food & drink” (their tag line).

We dined upstairs in a circular booth and enjoyed reading through their massive menus.  Everything sounded (looked and smelled!) delicious, so it was a difficult decision.  Ultimately, we started with the Old Bay seasoned popcorn (we had two orders – yum!) as well as their blue cheese stuffed and bacon wrapped dates.  (My mouth is watering as I type this…)

I sipped a fun cocktail – The Fraise Fling – a combination of strawberries, lychees, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, agave and Prosecco.  Let’s just say it was delish!  For dinner I enjoyed the Chicken Pot Pie with a cracked black pepper biscuit crust.  It was a flavorful, albeit heavy, dish perfect for a Sunday evening fall dinner.

For dessert I treated myself to their “Very Best Milkshake” – vanilla was my flavor of choice.  Being the milkshake aficionado that I am, I do not agree with their “VBM” labeling of this dessert; it was just OK.  I must admit, I had dessert envy when friends ordered the Uncle Buck’s Beignets with Raspberry Coulis, Semi-Sweet Chocolate Sauce, and Caramel dipping sauces.  A much better dessert selection!

I enjoyed my meal at Founding Farmers and would return again.

The Phillips Collection

Image

MUSEUM EXPERIENCE:  Last Sunday I spent the morning at the Phillips Collection, an intimate museum filled with a stunning collection of modern and contemporary art, located in Washington’s DuPont Circle neighborhood.  I’m not one to linger in museums for hours, so I very much enjoyed being able to cruise through the various rooms of this distinctive building while seeing works by acclaimed artists such as:  Picasso, Rothko, O’Keeffe, Renoir and Van Gogh.

Please enjoy some of my favorite pieces in the collection:

Interior with View of the Ocean (Richard Diebenkorn)

Berkeley No. 1 (Richard Diebenkorn)

Abstraction, Biarritz (Pablo Picasso)

Abstract Composition (Jacques Villon (Gaston Duchamp))

The Opera, Paris (Raoul Dufy)

One of the last things we did, prior to moving on, was experience the Wax Room.  (Note:  I still don’t think I truly “get it.”)

I’m glad I can now say I’ve been to the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.  Beautiful building, interesting history, filled with magnificent pieces – what more could you want?

Global Entry

TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: Are you a frequent international traveler? Are you tired of those long customs/immigration lines? Frustrating security delays? Consider applying for Global Entry, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.

For the last five years, I’ve been a Nexus member; when that expired earlier this year, I opted to switch over to the Global Entry program as it’s more versatile. Earlier this week I had my Global Entry interview at the airport and was approved!

Overall, the entire process lasted about three months – applying online; being reviewed/approved to schedule an interview; scheduling an interview slot; attending the appointment; receiving confirmation post-appointment that you were approved; now being able to use the Global Entry kiosks on my next trip!

I love a smooth travel experience!

Newseum

Image

MUSEUM EXPERIENCE:  While in Washington, D.C. last weekend, I spent some time at one of my favorite museums – The Newseum.  If you’ve never been, be sure to add the Newseum to your must experience list the next time you’re in town.  It’s a fantastic six-story museum full of all things newsworthy.  (See image above – it’s a portion of the Berlin Wall.)

Image

Outside the museum’s main entrance (and inside on the 6th floor) you’ll find the front page of every major newspaper in each of the 50-states.  They change this exhibit daily –  kind of neat!

Image

One of my favorite exhibits is the Pulitzer Prize section that displays the Pulitzer Prize winning photos awarded over the last several decades.  I felt uncomfortable snapping photos of these images, as many were too moving and/or graphic; however, I loved this quote at the entrance to the exhibit space.

Image

We happily stumbled upon two temporary exhibits called “The Assassination of JFK and Kennedy Family History.”  I really enjoyed these exhibits, namely for the incredible personal photographs that were displayed.

Image

Image

Interesting fact:  Over the years, Kennedy’s photographer took over 40,000 photos of the President and his family.  The negatives of these images were stored in a vault in the World Trade Center.  When 9/11 occurred, everything was destroyed and something like only 10 negatives were salvaged because they were out on loan to other museums/curators at that time.  Can you believe that?  Incredible!

Image

I love spending time on the 6th floor terrace overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue.  To your left is a clear shot of the Capitol building, straight ahead is the National Gallery of Art and to your right is the Federal Trade Commission.

Image

Image

The beauty of the Newseum experience is that you can enjoy it over a two-day period; your ticket is valid for 48-hours!  We hit everything we wanted to see on Saturday, but had the option to return on Sunday if we wanted to.  Nice touch, Newseum!

I can’t recommend this museum enough.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Proof

Image

DINING EXPERIENCE:  I spent the weekend in Washington, D.C. and dined at Proof on Saturday night.  Fabulous restaurant with an extensive menu – everything from charcuterie and assorted cheeses, to homemade pasta, seafood and grilled steak.  Oh, and the wine!  The wine…

I’m still trying to remember to capture images of my dishes, prior to consuming them, so forgive me that my Proof pictures are scarce.  Know, however, that if you find yourself in Washington, D.C., Proof is a must.

Image

After sharing a charcuterie plate with the table, comprised of duck pate with dried cherries, curried walnuts, and cornichons, I had the Wild Mushroom Bisque with crispy goat cheese arancini, sherry, and truffled parsley oil.  It’s rare for me to turn down a dish with truffled anything in it, so this was a given as my starter course.  The soup was excellent!  I enjoyed the fried goat cheese hidden within the arancini ball (risotto ball), but would have preferred the fried goat cheese only, sans risotto.

To be different, I ordered the Fresh Cavatelli with Heirloom Tomatoes, genovese basil, red onions, arugula, olive oil, parmesan for my entree.  (Note:  This dish was superb.  I ate every last morsel before realizing I hadn’t snapped a photo.  Oops!)

Image

For dessert, I also ordered something different – the Raspberry Bread Pudding, with brioche bun, orange zest,  and vanilla ice cream.  (I’m regretting not ordering a cheese plate, as their selection was phenomenal.  For some reason, however, the bread pudding was calling my name!)  This was one of the top 5 bread pudding desserts I’ve ever had.  Fact.  The combination of the warm raspberries and the brioche bread with the ice cold vanilla ice cream was melt-in-your-mouth heaven.  My dad, a bread pudding enthusiast, would appreciate this dessert, too.

Back to the wine… we had two bottles of a delicious Oregon white wine and I neglected to jot down its name.  Regardless, I thought it was interesting to note that the wine had a glass cork versus a traditional cork top.

Image

I saved it and brought home with me, as I collect wine corks from my travels (and the bottles I drink at home on my couch!).  All in all, our dinner at Proof was wonderful.  Great company, delicious fare and good wine!
